Skeletal Sytem of a Human
Our skeletal system is made up of bones and is very strong and flexible to support our body and to allow our bones to absorb impact better (refer figure1). The role of our skeletal system is to support our body, give it shape and protect our major organs. Bone Marrow is found in the centre of our bones and it provides inner structure to the bone, here is where red blood cells, platelets and some white blood cells are made.
Bones are made up of cells as is everything in our body and it changes a lot from a baby to an adult. Some of these changes are, the cartilage in a baby hardens and forms together with other bones to make larger bones. Also our bones get bigger and stronger with us as we mature. Our kind of skeletal system is called an endoskeleton which means a skeleton on the inside of our body. Most mammals have this kind of skeletal system such as dogs, cats and our closet animal relatives the monkeys. |
